Physical Therapy Assistant

Job Description: Provides treatments, tests, and evaluations of residents under the supervision of the Registered Physical Therapist.

Accountability: Reports to Corporate Director of Rehabili! tation and facility Director of Rehabilitation Services.

Equipment Used: Various nursing and therapy equipment.

Environment: Primarily indoor environment; may occasionally assist residents with some outdoor walking.

Duties and Responsibilities: The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations. Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position.

1.Interdisciplinary collaboration between Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy for planning treatments.

2. Responsible for all Physical Therapy treatments on a day to day basis. Evaluates resident performance and communicates to nursing and physicians. Documents resident’s progress and treatments in accordance with therapy plans as directed by the Registered Physical Therapist.

3. May be responsible for maintaining and inventorying all durable ! medical equipment. Orders supplies and equipment for the thera! py department.

4. Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulations regarding Rehabilitation Therapy.

5. May be required to participate in some meetings, for example, Quality Assurance, Restraint meetings, and Care Planning.

6. Responsible for all therapy billing, questionnaires, and progress notes.

7. Assures personal and staff compliance to all State and Federal regulations including blood borne pathogens, infection control, use of hazardous materials, and fire safety.

8. Assures personal and staff compliance to Resident’s Rights.

Facility specific Duties and Responsibilities:
9. The Physical Therapy Assistant will attain an efficiency standard for delivery of physical therapy services.

Physical Activity Requirements: Employee is required to use transfer/gait belts or to obtain the assistance of another employee when attempting to assist residents or when lifting or carrying objects! in excess of 25 lbs. The employee must be aware that during the normal, routine performance of the essential functions, some of the following body movements may occur naturally, although they are not a requirement of the job.

Primary Physical Requirements:
Lift up to 10 lbs: Frequently.

Lift 11 to 25 lbs: Occasionally.

Lift 26 to 50 lbs: Occasionally.

Lift over 50 lbs: Occasionally.

Carry up to 10 lbs: Frequently.

Carry over 50 lbs: Occasionally.

Reach above shoulder height: Occasionally.

Category II (Activity performed without blood exposure but exposure may occur in emergency)

Specific Task Exposure:
General Resident Care: Blood, urine, feces, vomitus, wound exudates, semen/vaginal secretions, other body fluids-cerebrospinal, synovial, pleaural, peritoneal, pericardial, amniotic;

Handling Soiled Linens and Clothing: Blood, urine, feces, vomitus, wound exudates, semen/vaginal secretions, other body fluids-cerebrospinal, synovial! , pleaural, peritoneal, pericardial, amniotic;

Cleaning Reside! nt Rooms and Common Areas- Blood, urine, feces, vomitus, wound exudates, semen/vaginal secretions.

Refer to Exposure Control Plan for additional information, especially for the cleaning chemicals used on a routine basis in housekeeping department.

This position typically does not involve Category I exposure risk; however, if employee is trained in first aid, some emergency procedures may entail Category I exposure risks.

Other Considerations and Requirements: Employee must be able to tolerate physical exertions, and must also be able to demonstrate to, and participate with, the residents in light aerobic exercises or range of motion exercises. Required to know the correct way of transferring residents with the use of a transfer belt so as not to injure himself or herself or the resident. Employee may be requested to perform other duties or tasks that are not listed, but are! within the competence and training of the individual.
