Position Summary:
This position is a member of the professional laboratory technical staff responsible for performing moderately complex to highly complex and specialized clinical laboratory tests/analyses of human blood, urine and other body fluids, tissues or substances using manual or automated techniques to obtain data for use in the diagnosis, management and treatment of disease/injury. Specific areas of accountability may include one, a combination, or all of the following disciplines: transfusion service, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, immunology, toxicology, urinalysis, Pathology assistance, and phlebotomy.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions: Other duties may be assigned. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential fu! nction of the job.

Performs, analyzes, evaluates, exp! edites and reports tests in assigned areas ensuring accuracy and reliability of results through application of clinical knowledge.

Exercises judgment in evaluation of analytical, pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of testing to ensure delivery of high quality, timely laboratory results.

Operates complex automated analysis equipment and/or laboratory computer system to perform designated tests; sets up, calibrates and adjusts laboratory equipment and apparatus appropriate for the designated test(s).

Participates in staff meetings, continuing education and mandatory in-services to gain knowledge in support of our mission and vision.

Stains and prepares slides of specimen material for microscopic examination and evaluation; operates a microscope; prepares chemical solutions and reagents; observes reactions and makes/records readings of test results.

Accurately records test data, makes statistical calculations, compares labora! tory results with normal values and investigates atypical results to determine cause.

Evaluates and determines validity of test sample value(s) based on testing of quality control materials.

Recognizes and addresses unexpected test reactions, errors and discrepancies.

Develops, tests, documents and implements new test methodologies, including quality control parameters, by evaluating guides or possible alternative approaches to standard methods; recommends updates to the procedure directory in the LIS.

Provides consultative services regarding laboratory procedures, test results and examinations to medical staff, laboratory personnel and other healthcare providers.

Assists in training of personnel and students.

May perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Management Responsibilities:
This job has no management responsibilities. On a shift basis, and in the absence of lab supervisor, lab manager o! r lab director, an incumbent may be assigned responsibility for serving! as a Tech-In-Charge.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university required, Med Tech degree preferred. Med Tech students in final semester of baccalaureate degree preparation who have completed all clinical rotations considered.

Technical Skills

Advanced clinical laboratory skills including use of glassware, pipettes and other to! ols for fine measurements

Ability to calibrate, trouble shoot and use precision analytical instruments

Ability to use microscope and accurately identify and identify and count normal and abnormal cells, biological structures or organisms in blood and other body fluids.

Ability to apply mathematics including algebra, use of decimals, fractions, statistics.

Working knowledge of chemistry and biology as it pertains to clinical laboratory sciences

Understanding and trouble shooting of complex problems associated with test systems and laboratory instruments

Computer skills

Depending on ministry, an understanding of Blood Banking and Transfusion medicine

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

MT (ASCP) or CLS (NCA) required or obtainable within one year. Internal employees prior to October 1, 2012 must have certification from HEW, ASCP or equivalent or qualified prior to March 1990.

Medical L! aboratory Scientist (MLS) can also be counted as meeting this requireme! nt (VCH-P only).

Constantly use hands/fingers to handle supplies and products

Constantly exchanges information with lab and nursing staff

Constantly observe and assess patient orders, test results, reagent and product labels, demonstrate close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and adjust focus.

Constantly detect abnormal smells

Occasionally required to carry or lift items weighing up to 25 pounds for short distances.

Frequently able to detect and discern bot! h loud and soft sounds such as phone calls, alarms, subtle equipment sounds, and customer communications.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to sharps potentially contaminated with blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, biological hazards or infectious agents, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
