Location: Wichita Kansas

Position Summary:
Assists in performing delegated resident/patient care activities; including activities of daily living and basic nursing care procedures, as well as identified competencies required in the assigned resident/patient care unit. Performs duties and presents oneself in a manner that would lead to high levels of resident/patient satisfaction. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Participates in routine activities of resident/patient care for the specific unit population of assigned area.

Performs delegated resident/patient care tasks in a timely and efficient manner, and under the guidance of a Registered Nurse/LPN.

Contributes to continuity! of care and effective communication by reporting care provide! d and changes in the resident/patient's condition to the primary nurse or designed in a timely manner.

May perform other duties as assigned or requested

Applies to Mercy/Wamego and Wichita Hospitals only:
Level 2 position requires experience in at least one direct resident/patient care area and one additional non-direct resident/patient care area.

Level 3 position requires experience in at least one direct resident/patient care area and two additional non-direct resident/patient care area.

Direct resident/patient care duties fall into one of the following types of areas:

Nurse Aide specific duties include: Prepares equipment and aids nursing staff during treatment and examination of resident/patient. Keeps RN informed of pertinent resident/patient data and findings. Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration rates, and food and fluid intake and output as directed. Prepares rooms, sterile instruments, ! equipment, and/or supplies for surgery/treatment. Assists in surgery/treatment as assigned. Provides nursing care to residents/patients under the direction of an RN in a manner which promotes quality care.

Intensive Care specific duties include : Transports patients. Prepares rooms, sterile instruments, equipment, and/or supplies for surgery/treatment, or procedures. Provides nursing care to patients under the direction of an RN in a manner which promotes quality care. This will include, but not be limited to, the assisting in achieving hemostasis, by use of either manual pressure, or hemostasis devices. Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern, and prior variances. Performs/observes electrocardiographs, documents interpretation at prescribed intervals and in the event of dysrhythmias or rhythm changes. Notifies RN and/or other appropriate personnel immediately in the event of life-threatening dysrhythmias.
Burn Care specific duties include : Perform delegated patient! care tasks in a timely and efficient manner, under the guidance of a registered nurse including dressing changes, hydrotherapy, ECG monitoring and phlebotomy. Collect accurate patient data and communicate all pertinent patient care data to the appropriate RN accurately and promptly. Complete unit related activities such as transcription of orders; computer data entry; receptionist duties and phone courtesies. Maintain unit readiness through procurement of equipment and stocking supplies.

Emergency Care specific duties include : Demonstrates skill in phlebotomy techniques and basic specimen collection. Performs unit related tasks: procurement and preparation of instruments and equipment, restocking of supplies, maintaining unit cleanliness, etc., as indicated. Cleans patient area and equipment. Assists triage nurse as requested. Observes patients in waiting room, reassures patients waiting, and assists RN with collection of specimens. Transports all noncriti! cal admits to specified unit. Assists RN transporting critical patients. Assists ER Code Blue team with procedures, specimen collection, equipment, and supplies as necessary.

OB Tech specific duties include: Feeding newborns, weighing newborns, changing diapers, providing cord care, bathing newborns, assisting with circumcision, and providing pericare and foley care to the mothers. Performing heel sticks and collection of genetic screening specimens. Performing accuchecks. Performing car seat screenings. Setting up a vaginal delivery cart. Cleaning the Operating Suite. Keeping RN informed of pertinent patient data and findings.

Non-direct patient care duties fall into one of the following types of areas:

ECG Monitoring specific duties include : Monitors heart rhythm patterns of patients to detect abnormal pattern variances. Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern, and prior variances. Con! tinuously observes electrocardiographs, documents interpretation at pre! scribed intervals and in the event of dysrhythmias or rhythm changes. Detects and notifies RN and/or other appropriate personnel immediately in the event of life-threatening dysrhythmias.

Health Unit Coordination specific duties include : Performs receptionist duties, maintains inventory of designated supplies and utilizes computer extensively. Responsible for initiating and maintaining unit and medical records. Responds promptly to all individuals seeking information. Keeps nurse in charge updated regarding unit activity, problems or complaints. Performs clerical duties to assist the health team in providing quality patient care. Coordinates activities to maintain an organized and efficient department.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.

One year, or more, of acute care experience is required for VCH-W Resource or PRN pool positions

Technical Skills:
Working knowledge of basic computer systems in order to complete data entry required.

Ability to use multiple forms of communication devices such as telephones, paging systems, portable data devices.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must have Kansa! s C.N.A. license, or successfully completed an accredited nursing progr! am.

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers offered by the American Heart Association or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer offered by the Red Cross within 30 days post date of hire.

Frequently required to push and pull items, such as patient beds, requiring an initial force of up to 75 lbs with a sustained force of up to 40 lbs.

Frequently required to assist in maneuvering resident/patients weighing 100-400 pounds and occasionally requ! ired to assist in maneuvering resident/patients weighing over 400 pounds.

Tolerate standing and walking for up to 6 hours at a time on hard and soft surfaces.

Frequently perform activities that require stooping, bending and reaching, squatting, balancing, and trunk twisting throughout the day.

Constantly able to effectively communicate verbally and in written form.

Occasionally required to sit in a stationary position for up to 30 minutes at one time.

Frequently able to detect and discern both loud and soft sounds such as resident/patient calls, verbal orders, monitors, and phone calls.

Frequently able to use hands and fingers to perform simple and fine motor handling tasks, such as pinching and manipulating while pushing syringes, adjusting IVs, handling intricate medical equipment, taking vital signs, writing, and using a keyboard.

Frequently able to use different types of visual perceptions to perform activit! ies such as moving medical equipment, evaluating resident/patients, rea! ding monitors and charts, and reading computer screens.

Occasionally required to detect unusual odors that could indicate infection or other problems with a resident/patient, or environmental issues such as smoke.

Working Conditions:
Occasionally exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of radiation.

Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, communicable diseases, etc is routine.
