Position Summary/Career Interest

We are currently hiring for a Clinical Nurse I in the Neurosurgical ICU.
The Cambridge 5 ICU (CA5 ICU) - Neurosurgical ICU - at The University of Kansas Healthsystem is a 28-bed state-of-the-art intensive care unit providing care to patients with a variety of Neurologic, Head and Neck, and Surgical Oncology disorders requiring intensive monitoring and treatment. Currently, the unit serves several full-time Neurosurgeons and Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgeons. In addition, our physician team includes 24/ 7 Neuro and Anesthesia Critical Care specialists for critical care patient management.
Some examples of the types of patient we care for include:
  • Craniotomy for tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and intracranial aneurysms
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Spine surgery
  • Movement disorders requiring surgical intervention (Parkinson’s Disease, Essential Tremor, etc.)
  • Surgical intervention for chronic pain and/or spasticity management
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Acute Ischemic Stroke, Hemorrhagic Stroke, Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
  • Neuromuscular diseases requiring mechanical ventilation and support
  • Neuroinfectious diseases
  • ENT specialty including skull base procedures and procedures for head and neck cancers
  • Some traumatic brain injuries, when our Neurosurgery team is primary
Technology utilized in the CA5 ICU includes intracranial pressure monitoring (both intraparenchymal and intraventricular), Phillips cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring systems, Pupillometry, intracranial electrode seizure monitoring with advanced seizure detection equipment, and much more! Nurses with specialized training from the CA5 ICU staff the Acute Stroke Response Team and play an integral role in treatment of this medical emergency! Responsibilities

  • The Clinical Nurse I provides professional nursing care through assessment and accurate documentation, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation for the comfort and well-being of patients.
  • Carries out a plan of care specific to unit competencies for the target patient population.
  • Coordinates care delivery and education through collaboration with patient, family and all h ealth care team providers to ensure safe, effective and quality patient care.
  • Follows organizational policies in providing safe patient care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Qualifications

Required:
  • AHA BLS Certification
  • Registered Nurse in State of Kansas
  • BSN Degree required for Patient Care Services
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing required for Perioperative & Procedural Services
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing required for Inpatient Acute Rehab
  • For Perioperative & Procedures and Inpatient Acute Rehab, ADN prepared nurses hired after February 24, 2017, must complete BSN degree by the fifth anniversary of employment as an RN with UKHA
  • 6 months to 2 years experience as a Clinical Nurse
Preferred:
  • BSN Degree for Perioperative & Procedural Services
  • BSN Degree for Inpatient Acute Rehab
